breathe in every last bit of summer
Labor Day weekend... can you believe it's here already? Let's all take a big, deep breath and enjoy. Summertime is winding down and the busy-ness of the fall season is just around the corner. But before you plow right in to the family barbecue, road trip or beach party, make sure you take some time to release any build up of stress, excess heat, and nervous energy. Arrive cool, calm and collected - and truly enjoy this last, lazy summertime weekend.
Blast your tension away with this powerful breathing technique. A staple in the practice of kundalini yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, is a pranayama called ego eradicator, combining an extended arm position with breath of fire. Yogi Bhajan taught breath of fire in a fun, colorful way. He instructed beginners to first stick out the tongue and imagine panting through your mouth like a dog. Feel the navel pulse in and out with each breath. Breathe rapidly. Establish a steady rhythm, then close your mouth so you are breathing at the same speed, but only through your nose.
To practice the powerful ego eradicator pranayama, sit up tall and straight. Extend your arms overhead and uplift them out to the sides at a sixty-degree angle. This is approximately at the ten o’clock and two o’clock position. Keep your arms taught and strong with elbows straight. Extend your thumbs away from the hands, and curl your fingers so that the fingertips press into the mounds at the base of each finger. Keep the thumbs up and out like a hitchhiker. Keep your shoulders and neck relaxed while the arms are strong, straight, and powerful.
Keep the arms extended in this position and begin breath of fire. Imagine that your thumbs are like cosmic antennae pulling prana into your body. The navel forcefully pulses inward on every exhale. Increase the pace to two exhales per second. Practice ego eradicator for one to three minutes.
To end the practice, take a long, deep inhale as you raise your arms up straight overhead. Touch the tips of your thumbs together, open your fingers, and hold your breath for as long as you feel comfortable.
When you are ready to exhale, sweep your arms out and down, and very slowly let the breath release out through your nose as you slowly lower your arms. Touch your fingertips to the surface beneath you to ground your energy down. As the arms sweep down, imagine you charging your pranic field around your body.
Sit still for several minutes, relax, and observe how you feel.
